British alt-pop and electronic artist PinkPantheress is speaking out about the challenges she faces in the music industry as a Black woman producing electronic music.
In a recent interview, the breakout star behind viral hits like “Boy’s a Liar” opened up about how her identity affects the way her music is received. “People are less willing to listen to electronic music that is made by a Black woman,” she stated candidly. “There’s still this perception that certain genres don’t belong to us, even though we were a part of its foundation.”
Electronic music has deep roots in Black culture — from house and techno in Detroit and Chicago to UK garage and jungle. But PinkPantheress says the industry still often sidelines Black women in these spaces. “I’ve noticed there’s more skepticism,” she said. “People expect me to sound a certain way, and when I don’t, they’re confused.”
The singer, who blends Y2K aesthetics with drum and bass, garage, and bedroom pop, has quickly built a global fanbase. Still, she’s calling for more awareness and recognition of Black women in electronic music. “We deserve to take up space in all genres,” she said.
PinkPantheress’s honesty has sparked a broader conversation online about representation and gatekeeping in music — a discussion that many feel is long overdue.
