Pop star Sabrina Carpenter has shared a little secret about her creative process: many of her best song ideas come just before she falls asleep. It’s in those quiet, dreamy moments that inspiration strikes the strongest.
Carpenter says ideas often come to her right as she’s about to drift off. She’ll record voice memos—sometimes in shared rooms or during sleepovers—trying not to wake anyone, just to capture the thought before sleep takes over.
She also finds creativity everywhere: in the shower, in the car, in cities she visits, or anywhere she feels emotionally alive.
Her recent album Short n’ Sweet reflects this nocturnal inspiration—intimate, sometimes hazy, often conveying emotions that feel like they belong to those liminal hours between waking and dreaming.
Carpenter collaborates with producers and songwriters like Jack Antonoff, John Ryan, and Amy Allen, trusting them to help realize the feelings she sketches out—no matter when or where the idea first appears.
These moments tend to be quieter, with fewer distractions. The mind is winding down, maybe a bit hazy, but open. Surprisingly good conditions for creativity.
Capturing ideas then means seizing them before they slip away—Carpenter clearly knows how fast a half-dreamt thought can vanish in the morning.
