An Austrian man has been charged with terrorism-related offences over an alleged plot to attack a concert by global pop star Taylor Swift, according to prosecutors.

Authorities say the 21-year-old suspect is accused of planning an attack targeting one of Swift’s Eras Tour shows scheduled in Vienna in August 2024. The concerts were ultimately cancelled after officials uncovered what they described as a serious threat.

Prosecutors allege the man had links to the so-called Islamic State group, carried out online research into bomb-making, and produced a small quantity of an explosive substance while attempting to acquire weapons illegally.

Investigators say the suspected plan was uncovered before it could be carried out, with authorities moving quickly to arrest those involved. The case is expected to be heard in court in Wiener Neustadt, and if convicted the suspect could face a lengthy prison sentence.

The alleged plot prompted the cancellation of three sold-out shows in Vienna, disappointing tens of thousands of fans but preventing what officials feared could have been a major tragedy.

Swift later acknowledged the situation, expressing gratitude to authorities for prioritising safety and emphasizing that protecting fans remains paramount.
