Camila Cabello ‘crushed’ by comparisons to Charli XCX

Camila Cabello has recently opened up about feeling “crushed” by comparisons between her 2024 single “I Luv It” and Charli XCX’s 2017 track “I Got It.” In an interview with Dork magazine, Cabello expressed that the negative reactions deeply affected her, leading to a period of dissociation.

“It crushed me,” Cabello admitted. “I don’t know how other artists do it because the negative stuff really depresses me… It was a very weird, intense time, and I started dissociating, which has only happened very few times in my life.”

Despite the initial hurt, Cabello found solace in the connection others felt with her music. She stated, “Even if nobody liked it, I’d still love this record because I only did what felt great to me. But knowing that other people have connected to this music does make me feel understood. I don’t know if I’ve had that before.”

The controversy began when fans noted similarities between “I Luv It” and Charli XCX’s “I Got It.” Charli XCX responded by recreating Cabello’s promotional video using her own song, which some perceived as a playful jab. Cabello, however, embraced the comparisons, expressing admiration for Charli XCX and dismissing feud allegations.

Reflecting on the experience, Cabello emphasized her commitment to artistic growth: “The things I was writing about for this record are more complex, and there is more tension, which doesn’t always lend itself to easily palatable pop… I do want to always push myself as a writer, though.”

Cabello’s candidness highlights the emotional challenges artists face amid public scrutiny and underscores her dedication to evolving as a musician.
