Deep Purple Legend Ian Gillan Reveals He Only Has 30% Vision Left

Radio 854 News | Rock Spotlight

Deep Purple rocker Ian Gillan only has 30 per cent vision leftLegendary Deep Purple frontman Ian Gillan has shared a startling personal revelation — he now has only 30% vision remaining. The rock icon, known for his soaring vocals on classics like “Smoke on the Water” and “Child in Time,” told Uncut magazine that his reduced eyesight has made even simple tasks increasingly difficult.

“I’ve only got 30 per cent vision. That won’t get better,” Gillan admitted. “It makes life mysterious. The hardest thing is working on my laptop … I can’t see anything on the screen unless I use my peripheral vision – I pick up a line by looking at it sideways … But it’s achingly tiresome. It takes a long time to do the work.”

Facing Challenges, But Still Rocking On

At 80 years old, Gillan is candid about the physical toll aging has taken, but he’s not ready to hang up the mic just yet. He joked about the “growing old thing” being both hilarious and frustrating:

“I walk down the road and hear something drop off – clang, there’s something else gone … Nothing’s changed really apart from I can’t pole vault any more.”

Despite his visual struggles, the singer remains deeply committed to Deep Purple. In a separate interview, he brushed off retirement rumors, saying he’ll keep going as long as his energy and performance level hold up. The band is reportedly booked through 2026, according to Gillan, a sign that he’s not planning to step down any time soon.

Adaptation Over Resignation

Gillan’s approach to his declining eyesight is grounded in pragmatism. Rather than dwell on what’s lost, he’s finding ways to adapt:

  • Using peripheral vision to read his laptop screen

  • Taking more time for tasks that others might take for granted

  • Relying on humor and acceptance to navigate daily life

He said plainly, “You find a way. You adapt.”

A Legacy That Outshines the Challenges

Even with health hurdles, Gillan’s enduring spirit is a reminder of the stamina and heart that have propelled Deep Purple through decades of music. His voice helped define hard rock, and his presence remains central to the band’s identity. Thousands of fans keep showing up — on tours, at festivals, and through their speakers — drawn by the power of his performance.

For listeners of Radio 854, this story isn’t just about a rock star facing adversity. It’s a testament to resilience, creativity, and the drive to keep doing what you love, no matter the obstacles.
