The Recording Academy has unveiled a major shake-up for the 2026 Grammy Awards, introducing two new categories designed to better reflect today’s music landscape — and give more artists and creatives a shot at music’s biggest night.
Best Traditional Country Album
Previously crowned under a single “Best Country Album” accolade, Country has now split into two:
Best Contemporary Country Album (the renamed legacy category)
Best Traditional Country Album, highlighting acoustic-driven, roots-style country — think fiddle, steel guitar, banjo, and outlaw vibes.
2. Best Album Cover
Packaging gets its own spotlight! A standalone award for album cover artistry has been created. Meanwhile, Best Recording Package now welcomes both standard and limited-edition releases — even those sold directly to fans.
Genre respect: Splitting Country into Contemporary vs. Traditional mirrors similar distinctions in R&B and honors the genre’s rich diversity.
Changes here too: artists who featured on previous Album of the Year–nominated records (under 20% contribution) regain eligibility for Best New Artist — a tweak that impacts rising stars aiming to break through.
Grammy telecast: Sunday, February 1, 2026, at Crypto.com Arena, Los Angeles.
The Recording Academy’s updates aim to more faithfully reflect the current music ecosystem — from acoustic Country traditions to creative visual packaging. As Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Academy, says, “listening carefully to Academy members to make sure our rules and guidelines reflect today’s music” is the driving force behind the changes.
Whether you’re a Country fan or an album art aficionado, these category additions broaden the Grammy spotlight — and add extra buzz to the road to the 68th annual ceremony.
Stay tuned: Radio 854 will bring you all the latest on nominees, winners, and backstage moments as we countdown to Grammy night!
