Lorde Opens Up About Gender Themes in “Man of the Year”
Pop visionary Lorde is no stranger to bold, thought-provoking lyrics—and in her latest track Man of the Year, she’s sparking conversations once again. In a recent interview, the New Zealand-born singer-songwriter delved into how gender dynamics helped shape the message and energy behind the song.
According to Lorde, Man of the Year is more than just a catchy anthem—it’s a deliberate exploration of power, perception, and how women are often expected to navigate ambition differently than men. “I wanted to flip the script,” she explained. “When a man takes control, he’s seen as a leader. When a woman does it, it can be read as arrogance or aggression. Man of the Year is me claiming that space unapologetically.”
Lorde revealed that the title itself is a tongue-in-cheek nod to how success is frequently gendered. “I thought, what if I took that phrase and made it mine—not in spite of being a woman, but because of it? There’s a kind of power in subverting that expectation.”
The track blends glossy production with sharp lyricism, echoing some of her earlier rebellious tones from Melodrama, while also embracing a newer, more assertive voice. “I wrote it from a place of wanting to be seen the way men often are—celebrated for being bold, for taking up space. It’s a little satirical, a little serious, and a lot me,” she added with a smile.
Fans and critics alike have praised the song for its confident edge and commentary on modern femininity. And as always, Lorde delivers her message with style—both poetic and powerful.
