Rick Astley Would Sing The Smiths ‘Every Weekend’ – But Says Blossoms Don’t Need Him
Pop legend Rick Astley has revealed his deep love for The Smiths – and just how often he’d love to perform their iconic songs. In a recent interview, the Never Gonna Give You Up singer admitted he’d be happy to sing The Smiths’ music “every weekend” if he could. But he’s also graciously stepping back, saying that Blossoms – the band he previously collaborated with for a series of tribute gigs – don’t need him anymore.
Astley teamed up with the indie rock group Blossoms in 2021 for a run of hugely popular shows where they performed The Smiths’ classics live, filling a nostalgic gap for fans of the legendary Manchester band. The collaboration was widely praised for its authenticity and respect for the original material.
“I absolutely loved doing those shows,” Astley said. “If they asked me again, I’d do it every weekend! But the Blossoms are incredible musicians, and they can carry it on their own. They don’t need me.”
The surprise pairing was an unexpected hit, with fans calling it a respectful and energizing tribute to the legacy of Morrissey and Johnny Marr. While Astley’s voice brought a fresh energy to the tracks, he remains humble about his role.
With no current plans to revive the project, Rick continues to perform his own material and recently hinted at more new music on the horizon. As for his Smiths covers? Fans can only hope they’ll make a return — even if just for a weekend.
