Rihanna, the multifaceted artist and entrepreneur, has recently opened up about the challenges she faces in balancing her thriving career with motherhood. In a candid interview for Harper’s Bazaar’s March 2025 issue, she discussed the complexities of managing her professional endeavors while raising her two sons, RZA and Riot, with partner A$AP Rocky.
The singer revealed that her sons have distinct personalities: RZA, aged 2, is described as an empath who loves music, books, and water, while 18-month-old Riot is characterized as hilarious and eager to sing, often serving as her morning alarm. Rihanna noted that although RZA initially took time to adjust to his role as a big brother, he eventually embraced it, with both boys sharing a strong affection for their father.
Balancing her career and motherhood has been a source of internal conflict for Rihanna. She expressed that every decision she makes revolves around her children, but engaging in activities she loves often means time away from them, leading to feelings of resentment and self-guilt. She stated, “You almost feel like something is always suffering for you to show up somewhere. And even when you show up there, it’s not 100 percent because there’s something else on the wheel.”
This struggle is not new for Rihanna. In a 2023 press conference ahead of her Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show, she acknowledged the difficulty of achieving a work-life balance as a new mother, noting that work inevitably takes time away from her child. She emphasized the importance of ensuring that professional commitments are truly worthwhile, especially when they require time away from family.
Beyond scheduling challenges, Rihanna has also faced personal adjustments in her postpartum journey. She discussed the difficulty of rediscovering her personal style after childbirth, mentioning that fashion choices have become more practical, focusing on breastfeeding accessibility and ease of cleaning. This shift has impacted her desire to go out, as dressing up no longer holds the same appeal.
Despite these challenges, Rihanna continues to navigate the delicate balance between her professional passions and her role as a mother, striving to find fulfillment in both areas without compromising her commitment to her family.
