In Memoriam: Roger Nichols (1940–2025), Composer of Carpenters Classics
Roger Nichols, the American composer and multi-instrumentalist best known for crafting timeless hits for The Carpenters, passed away peacefully at his home in Oregon on May 17, 2025, at the age of 84.
Born on September 17, 1940, in Missoula, Montana, Nichols’ musical journey began with his proficiency in violin, guitar, bass, and piano. His collaboration with lyricist Paul Williams led to the creation of iconic songs such as “We’ve Only Just Begun,” “Rainy Days and Mondays,” and “I Won’t Last a Day Without You.” These tracks became staples of The Carpenters’ repertoire and resonated with audiences worldwide.
“We’ve Only Just Begun” originated as a jingle for a Crocker Bank commercial. Richard Carpenter recognized its potential and transformed it into a full-length song, leading to its release in 1970. The track achieved significant acclaim, earning Grammy nominations and becoming a beloved wedding anthem.
Beyond his work with The Carpenters, Nichols’ compositions were embraced by artists like Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, Petula Clark, and The Monkees. His ability to craft melodies that conveyed deep emotion made him a sought-after songwriter in the music industry.
Paul Williams paid tribute to his longtime collaborator, stating, “Roger was my writing partner and my music school… a collaborator for years and a friend for life.”
Nichols is survived by his wife Terry and daughters Claire and Caitlin. His legacy endures through the music that continues to touch hearts across generations.
