My name is Ger Poppelier and I make and present the Music Safari for Radio 854.

I think it was about 40 years ago that I got to know the phenomenon of making radio through a broadcaster for retirement homes in Enkhuizen.

After a few years I started making programs at the then hospital broadcaster ROVOZ in Hoorn. I did that for quite a few years.

In the meantime I also started making programs at a pirate broadcaster. And what a wonderful time that was. We were in all kinds of places. In rooms at people’s homes, in a hayloft at the back of a farm, a garage workshop, in a caravan, in the attic.

At one point we got a production studio and we were safe there. At one point the transmitter was so well hidden that the Radio Control Service only found out about the location after three years by a stupid coincidence. The municipality of Enkhuizen investigated all kinds of cabling and came across a cable in the well-known tower the Dromedaris in the attic that was not on any drawing. That was indeed true. That was also the moment we decided to stop and continue as a local broadcaster. And that was honestly a fantastic time in terms of radio. What beautiful programs we made then.

A few years ago, local broadcasters in the Hoorn – Enkhuizen area decided to merge and start a regional broadcaster with the heavy cooperation of NH Radio.

For me, the moment came to realize that this was not what I wanted. And then, at the beginning of 2021, I bought some stuff and built a small and simple studio. And that is exactly my place where I like to sit, be busy and enjoy.

So I make the Music Safari there. A program where well-known and unknown artists can be heard. Hits, but also songs that are not or have not been a hit and will not become a hit. Well-known and unknown music, and in any language. But also the Maxi Safari. A track that can last between 6:00 and 11:00 minutes. And sometimes I am also nice and contrary. In short: the Music Safari.

I don’t play live. I don’t want to anymore because it becomes too much of an obligation in terms of day and time. Now I am free to decide when I will prepare and, especially, record.

Even when I am on holiday, it is guaranteed 100% that the Music Safari will be delivered. And I can say that from experience.

Making radio is a wonderful hobby where I can completely relax in my little studio.
