Music has been following me all my life. It started when I was a little boy, when my parents gave me a cassette recorder.
I started recording songs on the radio. Later I would do this more and more refined, after all I wanted the records ‘completely’ without presentations in the intro and outro. I discovered the ‘Nationale hitparade’ on Sunday evening on the then Hilversum 3.
Here the records were played completely without ‘interference’, my collection had started.
I got the bug more and more, I wanted to be a radio DJ!
To practice I got my brother involved. I used a radio/cassette recorder with microphone, via a cable it went to the speaker that was set up in another room. My brother ‘had to’ listen and I was in the other room ‘presenting’, the TOP-30! At a later stage this became more and more refined, I made ‘live’ radio programs in my room by recording them on a cassette. My equipment had been expanded in the meantime with a cassette deck, amplifier, mixing console,….
In our municipality at that time, I am talking about 1984, there was a free radio station called ‘Radio Titanic’. I had to see this up close! As a loyal listener of Radio Veronica, then still on Hilversum 3 on Fridays, I always listened to the Top-40 with Lex Harding.
A regular part was the home mix, I wanted to try this too. I made a remix of Michael Sembello’s ‘Maniac’. I went to the free radio with this. Because they liked it so much they asked me if I would like to make a program on the radio. My radio career had started.
Until the end of the 80s I made programs on this station after which I started looking for other horizons. I ended up at Radio Twenty-Nine (formerly Radio Allegro).
This story didn’t last very long because Radio Park in Brasschaat meant something to me.
It was 1990, the station was extremely popular, and yes, I was allowed to join the crew.
I got a program on Saturday afternoon, live between 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM. This would continue until the end of the 90s. A few other small radio adventures were Radio Baccarah (later renamed Arta FM), a station that broadcast from Belgium for the Netherlands, Radio Dockside, Radio Souvenir and Radio Saffier.
In 2004 I started on Radio Denderland (now Radio 854) with the programs ‘Liefde enz’ and ‘Studio 45’.
It was the start of a success story for me.
