Phil Collins, the legendary drummer and vocalist of Genesis, has recently provided a somber update regarding his health and its impact on his musical career. In an interview with MOJO magazine, the 74-year-old musician disclosed that his severe health issues have diminished his enthusiasm for creating new music.
Collins revealed that while he occasionally contemplates returning to his studio, his health challenges have deterred him. He stated, “I keep thinking I should go downstairs to the studio and see what happens. But I’m not hungry for it anymore. The thing is, I’ve been sick. I mean, very sick.”
His health complications began with a neck injury in 2007, leading to severe nerve damage in his hands. A subsequent major neck surgery in 2015 resulted in “drop foot,” impairing his ability to walk. These physical ailments have made it challenging for Collins to hold drumsticks, ultimately leading to his retirement from drumming in 2022.
Despite these setbacks, Collins embarked on a farewell tour with Genesis in 2022. During performances, he sang while seated, with his son, Nic Collins, taking over drumming duties. Reflecting on his father’s condition, Nic noted the long-term physical toll that drumming has taken on Collins’ health.
Collins’ last album of original material was released in 2002, followed by a Motown and soul covers album in 2010. Given his current health status, he has expressed a lack of desire to produce new music, focusing instead on managing his well-being.
Fans worldwide continue to express their support and admiration for Collins, honoring his extensive contributions to music and his enduring legacy.
