American Top 40 (AT40) is a legendary radio countdown show that has shaped the music industry since its debut on July 4, 1970. Created by Casey Kasem, Don Bustany, Tom Rounds, and Ron Jacobs, the show was designed to rank and count down the most popular songs in the United States based on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.

Casey Kasem Era (1970–1988, 1998–2004)

Casey Kasem, the iconic radio personality and voice actor, was the original host of AT40. His warm storytelling, trivia, and famous “Long Distance Dedications” made the show a beloved institution. The show initially ran until 1988, when Kasem left due to a contract dispute.

Shadoe Stevens Era (1988–1995)

Following Kasem’s departure, Shadoe Stevens took over as host, and the show continued evolving. However, due to industry changes, declining syndication, and competition from other countdown shows, American Top 40 was canceled in 1995.

Revival with Casey Kasem (1998–2004)

Kasem revived the show in 1998 under a new format, using Radio & Records charts instead of Billboard rankings. This second era lasted until Kasem retired in 2004.

Ryan Seacrest Era (2004–Present)

In 2004, Ryan Seacrest took over as host, modernizing the show for a new generation. The program returned to using Billboard’s Mainstream Top 40 and Hot AC charts, featuring interviews with artists and digital engagement. Under Seacrest, AT40 has expanded globally, reaching millions of listeners in over 150 countries.

Legacy and Influence

American Top 40 has been a staple of pop culture, influencing generations of music fans. It introduced audiences to new artists, chronicled shifts in music trends, and provided a snapshot of each era’s most popular songs. Casey Kasem’s signature sign-off—“Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars”—remains one of the most iconic catchphrases in radio history.
