Adele Wanted to Record One Direction’s ‘Fool’s Gold’ Before It Became a 1D Hit!

Adele was apparently a big fan of One Direction’s music – and one of the band’s songs almost ended up in her own recording catalogue!

A surprising musical revelation has emerged about Adele and One Direction. The British superstar once expressed interest in recording the band’s song Fool’s Gold, before it became part of their 2014 album Four.

The story has been revealed by songwriters Jamie Scott and Mozella in the new book A Whole Lotta History, written by Billboard journalist Jason Lipshutz.

The songwriting duo worked together on Fool’s Gold, creating the track during a studio session that also produced another song. Mozella recalled that they immediately felt they had something special, describing it as an honest and raw song.

Jamie Scott first played the track for Harry Styles, who loved it. But he wasn’t the only major artist impressed by the song.

Scott revealed that Adele personally contacted him after hearing the track.

“I remember getting a call from Adele, saying, ‘I just heard this song that you wrote for One Direction!'” he recalled.

According to Mozella, Adele made it clear that she loved the song and wanted it for herself. However, there was one problem: Scott had already promised the track to One Direction.

As a result, the song remained with the boy band and eventually appeared on their fourth studio album, Four, released in 2014.

Fool’s Gold later became the fifth single from the album, which topped the charts in both the United States and the United Kingdom.

A missed opportunity for Adele?

It’s fascinating to imagine how Fool’s Gold might have sounded with Adele’s distinctive voice. Instead, the song became another memorable track in One Direction’s impressive catalogue.

The revelation offers fans a little-known glimpse into the music industry’s songwriting world and shows just how highly Adele regarded the band’s material.
